Hunting Treasure At Diamond Mines

Updated on October 3, 2009

Diamonds Rubies Gold Sapphire

Hunting for treasure at diamond mines is really fun activity to do with family or friends. If you or your family enjoys the outdoors, camping, hiking, and hunting for treasure you will need to visit one of the many diamond, ruby, sapphire, or gold mines located here in the United States.

This could be a nice vacation to plan for next summer or spring. However many mines are open all year round. This is an inexpensive adventure that everyone can have fun with. Arkansas, North Carolina, California, and Washington are a few of the states where you can diamonds, rubies, sapphire, quartz crystal, garnet, moonstone and more. The cost at each mine is different but very affordable. Here is some information about cost and what some of the many different mines have to offer treasure hunters.

  • Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas - You can find diamonds at this mine. They also offer hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping. You can bring your own tools or you can rent them from the park. Whatever you find you get to keep and take home. Even if you find a 4.68 carat white diamond like a man from Michigan in September of this year. Cost $6.50 for adults and $3.50 for kids ages 6-12. Children under 6 are free.
  • Mason's Ruby & Sapphire Mine in Franklin, North Carolina- They are open 7 days a week from 8am to 5pm. Here you will find mostly sapphire in the lavender to pink color range, but rubies and other stones have been found. In June of this year a 59 carat sapphire was found at this mine. Cost - children under 6 years old are free, ages 6-11 is $15 and adults are $30 There is no place to camp on site here but there is cabin rentals just up the road.
  • Wiita Mining And Exploration in California - You will find gold at this facility. They offer something a little different when searching for the gold. You can also search for fire agate here. Fee for digging here is $25 per person per day.

Finding Your Treasures

Hunting for treasures at these places are fun but if you do not come prepared it can become a little time consuming or stressful. Be sure and check the websites above for all the information needed if you plan to visit.

Mines can either be salted or unsalted. Salted means that the owners have put the gems in the soil already and all you do is just look for them. It is very easy and small children would probably enjoy this better as you are guaranteed to find them, Unsalted means you actually get to dig and unearth soil that has not been previously explored. Finding your treasures here takes a bit longer and is a little more work. I prefer the unsalted. After you have found the jewels most places have a spot where you can get them polished, cut and even sold if you find one that is big enough.
